What You Need To Know About Grasshoppers
Grasshoppers are known for their powerful legs that allow them to jump. Many people don’t realize that they can use their wings and fly. They come in a wide variety of colors, including green, brown, and yellow, and some have colorful markings on their wings to attract mates. They’re typically between 1 to 3 inches, depending on the species.
Due to the extreme cold, these pests are present worldwide, except in the north and south poles. They’ll inhabit anywhere they can find food, but they prefer semi-arid, sub-humid climates, such as throughout the middle of the United States.
Grasshoppers are usually present between the spring to the fall. They lay their eggs in late summer and fall, hatching in spring and early summer. They’ll feed until winter weather kills them. They’ll stay in place until food becomes scarce and migrate to another food source.
The Dangers Of Grasshoppers
Grasshoppers aren’t typically dangerous to people. They’re not poisonous, and they don’t often bite. They can become contaminated if they eat toxic plants, though. If touched or captured, grasshoppers will spit a brown liquid at their attackers. While effective against natural predators, this doesn’t do much to humans.
However, they’re very dangerous to your lawn, crops, garden, and other plants on your property. The USDA states that ten adult grasshoppers per square yard damage rangeland, as 6-to-7 adult grasshoppers can eat as much as a cow. A grasshopper infestation can wipe out entire fields of crops.
Grasshoppers do the most damage when they’re matured, generally in the late summer – which is when many plants and crops are ripe. In addition to your grass, leaves, vegetables, and other plants, they can also feed on your wooden fences, paint, and wooden handles during years when their numbers are high. They usually avoid peas, squash, and tomatoes but will eat many other plants and crops.
